Daisy Ridley to Return as Rey in New ‘Star Wars’ Film
Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy revealed that Daisy Ridley’s Rey will return in a new “Star Wars” feature film at Star Wars Celebration in London on Friday. Steven Knight (“Peaky Blinders”) wrote the script, which will be directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy (“Ms. Marvel”).This. will be Ridley’s first time portraying the character since 2019’s “The Rise of Skywalker.”
The project represents several significant turning points for the franchise: The first female and person of color to helm a “Star Wars” film is Obaid-Chinoy. The Pakistani filmmaker most recently directed two episodes of “Ms. Marvel” for Disney+. She previously won two Academy Awards for documentary short, in 2011 for “Saving Face” and in 2015 for “A Girl in the River: The Price of Forgiveness.”
Following his work on Marvel’s “Deadpool 3” and the Netflix limited series “All the Light We Cannot See,” Shawn Levy is still attached to helm a “Star Wars” film. Taika Waititi (“Thor: Ragnarok”) is also working on a “Star Wars” feature in which he would both direct and act.
